Bumthang

Bumthang — made up of four valleys (Chumey, Choekhor, Tang and Ura) — is widely regarded as Bhutan's spiritual heartland, home to some of the country's oldest temples and strongest Guru Rinpoche legends.

• Jakar Dzong — overlooking the Choekhor valley.
• Kurjey Lhakhang — where Guru Rinpoche is said to have left a body imprint in rock.
• Jambay Lhakhang — one of Bhutan's oldest temples, traditionally dated to 659 AD.
• Membartsho (the "Burning Lake") — a sacred gorge on the Tang Chhu river.
• Tamzhing Monastery — noted for its original wall paintings.

Temple-hop through the Choekhor valley, walk or cycle between villages, and sample local specialities — Bumthang is known for its honey, apples and buckwheat.

Autumn brings the Jambay Lhakhang Drup festival; summers are notably cooler here than in the lower valleys, making it a pleasant warm-season stop too.

A long but scenic road journey through central Bhutan, or a short domestic flight from Paro where schedules allow.
