Itinerary
Overnight: Paro
Arrive at Paro International Airport, dramatically set amid forested Himalayan ridges. After a traditional welcome by the guide and driver, begin your journey into Bhutan’s spiritual heart.
Kyichu Lhakhang
One of Bhutan’s oldest and most revered temples, Kyichu Lhakhang dates back to the 7th century and was built by Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo. Butter lamps glow continuously as pilgrims circle the temple spinning prayer wheels, offering prayers for peace and protection. The serenity here sets a contemplative tone for the journey ahead.
Rinpung Dzong
Visit Rinpung Dzong, the “Fortress of the Heap of Jewels.” This massive monastery-fortress is both a spiritual and administrative center of Paro. Its towering whitewashed walls, inner courtyards, and sacred shrines echo with centuries of monastic life.
Traditional Wooden Cantilever Bridge
Walk across Paro’s iconic wooden bridge, symbolizing the transition from the secular world into sacred space—a meaningful ritual gesture in Bhutanese architecture.
Evening at leisure in Paro town or quiet reflection in the valley.
Overnight: Thimphu
After breakfast, drive along the Paro and Thimphu rivers toward Bhutan’s capital.
Tamchog Lhakhang & Iron Chain Bridge
Stop at Tamchog Lhakhang, founded by the legendary bridge-builder saint Thangtong Gyalpo.
Memorial Chorten
In Thimphu, visit the National Memorial Chorten, where one can see the elderly devotees murmur mantras, monks chant scriptures, and prayer wheels turn endlessly.
Changangkha Lhakhang
Perched above the city, Changangkha Lhakhang is one of Thimphu’s oldest temples and a traditional pilgrimage site for newborn blessings. From here, one enjoy sweeping views of the Thimphu valley.
Tashichho Dzong
Explore Tashichho Dzong, the seat of Bhutan’s government and central monastic body. The evening light that illuminates it give it a magnificent glow.
Overnight: Punakha
Drive to Punakha over the Dochula Pass (3,100 m).
Dochula Chortens
Pause among the 108 Druk Wangyal Chortens, prayer monuments built for peace and protection. On clear days, snow-capped Himalayan peaks form a breathtaking spiritual backdrop.
After entering the Punakha valley:
Chimi Lhakhang
Walk through rice fields and villages to reach Chimi Lhakhang, the Temple of the Divine Madman. This unique pilgrimage site is associated with fertility blessings and unconventional Buddhist teachings, offering insight into Bhutan’s deeply human spirituality.
Punakha Dzong
Visit Punakha Dzong, Bhutan’s most majestic sacred fortress, standing at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers. It has served as the coronation site of Bhutan’s kings and the winter residence of the central monk body. The harmony of water, architecture, and ritual makes this one of the most spiritually powerful places in the kingdom.
Overnight: Paro
After breakfast, return to Paro Valley.
Simtokha Dzong (en route)
Stop at Simtokha Dzong, Bhutan’s oldest dzong, originally built to subdue negative energies and house Buddhist learning.
Paro Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest Monastery)
After lunch hike to Tiger’s Nest Monastery, Bhutan’s most sacred and iconic site. The trail winds through pine forests fragrant with incense, prayer flags fluttering overhead.
Clinging to a sheer cliff face 900 meters above the valley, the monastery marks the cave where Guru Rinpoche meditated in the 8th century, bringing Buddhism to Bhutan. Reaching Taktsang is considered a profound spiritual milestone.
