Six days of carefully organized cultural travel along Bhutan's Royal Heritage Route examines the historical underpinnings of the nation as well as its governance. Itinerary

Arrival in Paro
Activities planned for Day 1

Arrive at Paro International Airport, one of the most picturesque landing sites in the world, encircled by snow-capped mountains and lush forests. Your driver and Bhutanese guide will meet you following the visa process.

Begin your tour at the 17th-century Rinpung Dzong, which is a masterpiece of  Bhutanese architecture. Once a strategic stronghold defending the Paro Valley, it also served as a seat of royal and religious authority.

Explore the National Museum of Bhutan housed in the ancient Ta Dzong watchtower. The museum offers a rich introduction to Bhutan’s royal history, traditional arts, religious artifacts, and ancient weaponry

In the evening stroll through Paro town and explore local handicraft shops and cafes.

Paro to Thimphu
Activities planned for Day 2

Drive: Paro to Thimphu (approx. 1.5 hours)

After breakfast, drive to Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan. Thimphu is probably the only capital city without traffic lights.

Sightseeing includes:

  • Tashichho Dzong – The seat of Bhutan’s government and the summer residence of the Je Khenpo (Chief Abbot). This dzong  has long been associated with royal ceremonies and state functions.
  • National Memorial Chorten – Built in memory of the Third King, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, revered as the “Father of Modern Bhutan.”
  • Traditional Arts & Crafts School (Zorig Chusum) – Witness students mastering the 13 traditional Bhutanese arts which includes carpentry, wood carving, sculpting among others.
  • Buddha Dordenma Statue – One of the largest seated Buddha statues in the world. The site offers panoramic views of Thimphu valley.

In the evening, enjoy a walk through Thimphu city or visit local markets.

Thimphu to Punakha
Activities planned for Day 3

Drive: Thimphu to Punakha (approx. 3–4 hours)

Depart Thimphu and ascend to Dochula Pass (3,100 m), marked by 108 Druk Wangyal Chortens. On clear days, enjoy breathtaking views of the eastern Himalayas.

Descend into the warmer  Punakha Valley, once Bhutan’s capital and winter residence of the central monastic body.

Visit  Punakha Dzong, located at the confluence of the Pho Chhu (Male River) and Mo Chhu (Female River). This dzong is central to the history of monarchy in Bhutan.

Later, take a gentle walk to Chimi Lhakhang, the “Temple of Fertility,” through traditional villages and rice fields.

Punakha to Trongsa
Activities planned for Day 4

Drive: Punakha to Trongsa (approx. 5–6 hours)

Travel eastward through scenic valleys and mountain passes toward Trongsa. En route, pass through Pele La Pass (3,300 m), traditionally considered the boundary between western and central Bhutan.

Upon arrival, visit the awe-inspiring Trongsa Dzong, dramatically perched above a deep gorge, it once controlled all east–west travel routes. 

Historically, all five kings of Bhutan served as Trongsa Penlop (Governor) before ascending the throne.

Explore the Trongsa Ta Dzong, now a museum which offers fascinating insights into royal lineage, artifacts, and Bhutan’s transition to monarchy.

Trongsa to Paro
Activities planned for Day 5

Drive: Trongsa to Paro (approx. 6–7 hours)

After breakfast, begin the return journey westward, retracing the ancient royal route through central Bhutan. Enjoy scenic stops along the way for photography, tea breaks, and glimpses of rural Bhutanese life.

Arrive back in Paro Valley by late afternoon. Visit Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the oldest temples in Bhutan and most sacred. Optionally, enjoy a traditional dinner at a farmhouse after a hot stone bath.
